Talk about “money moves.”
Hours before Cardi B was set to take the stage at California’s Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival — attempting the impossible by following Beyonce’s showstopping performance on Saturday — Billboard announced some happy news.
Cardi’s debut album, “Invasion of Privacy,” entered the Billboard 200 at No. 1.
With her new album, released on April 6, Billboard reports that Cardi also set a new record for the most streamed album in a single week by a female artist, drawing more than 100 million streams worldwide (Beyonce previously held the record with “Lemonade” in 2016).
“Invasion of Privacy” is the second largest debut of the year, coming in second to Justin Timberlake’s “Man of the Woods.”
The album’s stellar performance also means that Cardi has become the fifth female rapper to top the Billboard 200. Nicki Minaj last achieved the feat in 2012 (and 2011). So did Eve (1999), Foxy Brown (1999 and 1997) and South Orange’s Lauryn Hill (1998).
The 25-year-old rapper, born Belcalis Almanzar, who grew up in the Bronx and lives in Edgewater, burst into the mainstream last summer with “Bodak Yellow (Money Moves).” When the song went to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in October, Cardi, a former stripper and former cast member on the VH1 reality show “Love & Hip Hop: New York,” matched Lauryn Hill’s 1998 record as the first solo female rapper in nearly 20 years to have a No. 1 single.
Last weekend, Cardi made headlines for her big pregnancy reveal during a performance on “Saturday Night Live” after months of rumors and speculation.
Cardi is expecting a child with her fiance, the rapper Offset, from the group Migos. Billboard reports that “Invasion of Privacy” had the second-biggest streaming week for any album in 2018. The biggest belongs to the Migos album “Culture II.”
Cardi is set to take the stage at Coachella at 10:25 p.m. (7:25 p.m. PST) on Sunday. You can stream her performance on YouTube here.
